In 2021, during the height of COVID lockdowns, Buncombe County developed a 20 year strategic plan (Buncombe 2043 Plan found on buncombecounty.org) of what the county/city should look like in the future. It was unanimously passed in May 2023.The concept is right on the money. We need to have a ‘roadmap’ on what has to be done to ensure the county is ready for the future – technology, infrastructure, economically and environmental. It is estimated that as many as 50,000 to 80,000 new residents will move to Buncombe county by 2043.
Equity is in every element of the 2043 plan – Procedural Equity, Distributional Equity, Structural Equity. Equity in Decision making. Every decision will be approved by the Equity officer. Included will be a Racial Equity Action Plan which will foster important changes moving forward from criminal justice to community health. Residents/projects will be scored on the EQUITY ANALYSIS TOOL. The Buncombe County 2043 plan looks to convert Buncombe County and Asheville into a ‘smart city’
A Smart City is one where people all live in the same types of housing – apartments - essentially – Where you don’t own anything and you like it ! (World Economic Forum 2016)You don’t need a car because you will live and work within 15 minutes of walking. If you need a car, you will rent an electric car for the day to run your errands. Zero Carbon Emissions. The World Economic Forum embraces this concept and our Mayor embraces a net zero carbon footprint and the World Economic Forum. She signed her name as part of the ‘climate Mayors’, to a letter in 2020 that went to the US Congress urging extreme measures to curb climate change. Buncombe County of the future – we will all live in the city.
We will not own land, or homes or cars. We will have much more technology with cameras all over the city and apartments. Neighbors will ‘snitch on neighbors’. You will be given an Equity Social Score – and if you are ‘bad’, the government can turn off your bank account, your electricity and ability to get food. While, this is the extreme. It MIGHT be achieved. WE NEED TO STOP THIS ! Time to be active and get out and vote.
